Genevieve Anne Goulding and her family migrated to Australia from the UK in 1970.
Prior to that they had lived in Singapore, the West Indies and the UK, which entailed many moves and a total of nine schools. Genevieve believes this background was good preparation for medical life requiring resilience and tolerance of change and diversity.
Genevieve commenced her medical studies at the University of New South Wales in 1973, graduating MB BS in 1979. Genevieve completed her prevocational training at the Prince Henry and Prince of Wales Hospitals in Sydney, and continued her vocational training in anaesthesia in 1982, gaining Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a predecessor of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, in 1986.
Genevieve worked as a consultant at several institutions between 1986 and 2001 including the Illawarra Health Service, Prince Henry and Prince of Wales Hospitals, St George Hospital, Sydney, the Royal Women’s Hospital, Sydney, and in 2001 the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital.
In 1997, she became one of the founding members, and later Chair, of the Welfare of Anaesthetists Special Interest Group at ANZCA. This group was formed to raise awareness of the many personal and professional issues that can adversely affect the physical and emotional well-being of anaesthetists at all stages of their careers. The group has developed significant resources and provides a ‘live’ network of support. It is a highly valued and respected source of education for anaesthetists across Australia and New Zealand.
Genevieve’s commitment to welfare issues was further shown through her involvement as a member of the 2014 National AMA/beyondblue Roundtable Advisory Group on Junior Doctor and Medical student mental health. Still actively involved in this issue, Goulding has a particular interest in the fields of impairment, competency assessment and substance misuse.
Genevieve is also a contributing member to several medical organisations other than ANZCA, including the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA), the Australian Medical Association (AMA), and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD). She has held a number of positions with the ASA including Education Officer (2005 – 2008), Executive Councillor (2003 – 2004), NSW State Chair (1998 – 2000) and member of the Continuing Medical Education committee (1996 – 2001).
She continues to contribute to medical research through her role as Chair of the ANZCA Research Foundation Committee, and as a reviewer for two important clinical journals, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and BMJ.
In May 2014, Goulding was appointed as the ANZCA president and held the position for two years until 2016. She was the fourth consecutive woman to hold that position.
Drawing on her expertise and collaborations forged during her Presidency, Genevieve leads ANZCA’s International Liaison Group which is tasked with developing a College’s international strategy. This involves working closely with the Colleges in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia as well as forging greater ties and collaboration with the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland, which bestowed honorary fellowship on Genevieve in 2015.
