Marie Hill began her medical degree in 1932. Four years into her degree she left university to get married. After having two children, and with a husband taken prisoner in Singapore, she returned to university to finish her studies. Hill graduated from the University of Sydney in 1944.
She began work with residencies at the Prince Alfred Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, followed by a short period in general practice. Hill then travelled to England where she gained her Diploma of Anaesthetics in 1948. Returning to Sydney, she took on a number of concurrent honorary anaesthetist positions at the Rachel Forster Hospital, Balmain District Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital, as well as Consultant Anaesthetist at Ryde Hospital.
Hill remained a member of the honorary staff of several metropolitan hospitals, with a particular interest in Balmain District Hospital.
