James Anthony Ferris graduated from medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1947. In 1951 he completed a Diploma in Anaesthetics in England, and in 1954 was admitted to fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Like many others, Ferris held a series of concurrent appointments at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide Children’s Hospital and with the Tuberculosis Services of South Australia.
