Diana Nowlan Furness attended the University of Sydney and graduated MB BS in 1953. She then worked as a Junior Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, followed by a five month term as Junior Resident Anaesthetist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children.
She then relocated to Melbourne where she was Senior Resident Anaesthetist at the Queen Victoria Hospital for six months, followed by an ongoing position as Anaesthetic Registrar at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne.
Furness married in 1958 and she changed her name to Tolhurst.
Tolhurst continued to work after marriage, and became a specialist anaesthetist at the Footscray and District Hospital (later Western Hospital). She worked there for many years, concluding her career at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
