Brendan Vincent Lyne was the son of a doctor from the small fishing village of Castletown Brea, County Cork. Lyne graduated from University of Ireland in 1944 and followed that with a Diploma of Anaesthesia in 1947.
Lyne migrated to New Zealand in the second half of 1950, and was the first overseas trained anaesthetist to be appointed to the full time staff of Auckland Hospital. Lyne spent eight years working for the Auckland Hospital Board which included Auckland, Greenlane, Middlemore and the Cornwall Women’s (original National Women’s Hospital) hospitals. As the 1950s drew to a close, Lyne commenced part-time private practice, while maintaining a public load as well.
