Judith Nella Nicholas graduated from the University of Sydney in 1952, and followed quickly with a Diploma of Anaesthesia from the University of Melbourne in 1954.

In addition to her busy clinical work, Nicholas was strongly involved with the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA), appointed secretary and, later, chair, of the New South Wales (NSW) branch. She was also a member of the NSW regional committee for the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for ten years. In 1967 she was appointed secretary of the Third Asian/Australian Congress of Anaesthetists, to be held in Canberra in 1970. Following the success of this congress, she was awarded the Gilbert Troup medal by the ASA.
