Judith Mary Ross completed her medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1950. She followed this fairly quickly with a two and a half year training and working experience in England, where she gained her Diploma of Anaesthesia and fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons. On return to Australia she was appointed registrar in anaesthetics at the Sydney Hospital, a position she took up in January 1954.
Ross also worked at the Rachel Forster Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in North Sydney.
