In the midst of World War II, John Spencer Windeyer completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney, before enlisting with the Australian defence force.

After the war, Windeyer gained his Diploma of Anaesthesia at the University of Melbourne, and held a series of positions in Sydney with a focus on anaesthesia.
